All'epoca veniva chiamata SGP. Nel 1998 la societ\u00e0 specialistica cambi\u00f2 il suo titolo in SSP. Fin dall'inizio si tennero i congressi annuali, il primo il 13 novembre 1971 a Berna. Nel 1984 la societ\u00e0 istitu\u00ec il Premio di ricerca Hans R. M\u00fchlemann e support\u00f2 la creazione delle scuole di igiene dentale svizzere a Zurigo (1973 e 1975), Ginevra (1976) e Berna (1984), nonch\u00e9 l'accreditamento della loro formazione da parte della Croce Rossa Svizzera (CRS) nel 1996.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Dalla sua fondazione, la SSP riconosce specialiste e specialisti in parodontologia. Nel 2007, la formazione continua \u00e8 stata accreditata dalla Confederazione e dalla Societ\u00e0 Svizzera Odontoiatri SSO con il titolo di \u00abSpecialista in Parodontologia SSO SSP\u00bb.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>La SSP \u00e8 stata membro fondatore della European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), fondata nel 1991. Nel 2000, la SSP ha potuto ospitare a Ginevra il 3\u00ba Europerio, allora il pi\u00f9 grande congresso internazionale di parodontologia. Inoltre, la Svizzera e quindi anche la SSP sono state ospiti del primo Workshop Europeo di Parodontologia, che ha avuto un grande successo e che dal 1993 viene ripetutamente organizzato dall'EFP.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>La SSP ha creato nel 1994 un fondo di borse di studio e da allora promuove le attivit\u00e0 scientifiche nel campo della parodontologia. Inoltre, ha sostenuto la fondazione del Consiglio Svizzero di Odontoiatria SFZ (2001) e quella della Fondazione Svizzera per l'Implantologia IIS (2007).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Il tradizionale convegno annuale della SSP \u00e8 stato sempre adattato alle esigenze e alle possibilit\u00e0 temporali dei membri. Nel 2003, il convegno annuale si \u00e8 svolto insieme agli Swiss Dental Hygienists a San Gallo. Nel 2011, il convegno \u00e8 stato tenuto congiuntamente al Congresso IIS. Nel 2018, la SSP ha organizzato a Berna il congresso comune Together18 con la Societ\u00e0 Svizzera di Implantologia SGI.
